The International Waterbike Regatta (IWR) has been organised since 1980 and with several hundred participants it is probably the largest student water sporting event in Europe. Student teams from all over Europe meet once a year at a different venue to compete in various disciplines with the pedal boats (waterbikes) they built themselves. These boats are by no means comparable to the pedal boats we see on lakes or at sea; they are structures trimmed for efficiency or fancy design. Most of the participants have a background in marine engineering or shipbuilding, so they applied the knowledge acquired in their studies to the design and construction of the waterbikes. The regatta disciplines include acceleration races, long-distance races, measuring bollard pull, and forward-stop-backward. There are not many rules, however, the important thing is that the waterbikes are built by students, they are powered by the leg muscles, and you should have fun at the event.
IWR 2025 is going to take place in Zagreb, Croatia, from 28/05/2025 till 01/06/2025.
We expect about 300 student participants from all over Europe and over a hundred guests on every event day.

In 2018, IWR was also organized by the Croatian Association of Naval Architecture Students (HUSB). Here you can see a video of this event.
